Site Preparation for New Asphalt Pavement
The overall strength and performance of asphalt pavement are dependent not only upon the asphalt mix’s structural design but also on the load-bearing capacity of the sub-base constructed.

A suitable sub-base will act as a stable surface to support pavement and the weight of expected traffic. It will aid in the prevention of damage to the asphalt during winter freeze-thaw cycles. Most importantly, the sub-base must be compacted appropriately to ensure durability.

What to Expect from Our Site Preparation Crews:

  • Demolition and removal: Superior’s Site Preparation crew will use heavy equipment to remove all existing pavement and remove it from the job site. We recycle 100% of all clean tear-out material and reuse it in our asphalt mix designs, proudly keeping them out of Michigan’s dumps and waterways.

  • Grading and sloping: The sub-base must be sloped appropriately and graded to ensure no standing water on the asphalt surface. Proper drainage and water flow are vital to expanding the life of an asphalt pavement. Standing water is the cause of most structural failures, such as

  • potholes, cracks, and heaving.

  • Final Preparation of Sub-Base: Once grading and sloping are complete, our Prep. The crew will use heavy rollers to compact the sub-base. Proper compaction will ensure the durability of your installed asphalt pavement. Suppose any soft spots of clay or sand are discovered. In that case, those spots will be undercut and replaced with a stronger aggregate before compaction is complete once the sub-base is completed to our satisfaction, Superiors Prep. The crew will clean the worksite thoroughly for our paving crews to take over and lay the asphalt surface.

Our experienced asphalt specialists will manage your project and provide you or your business with a surface you can be proud of. For more information on our milling and site preparation services throughout West & Mid Michigan, contact us today or call us directly at 616.451.3200.

What is Asphalt Milling?

Milling is a recycling and re-paving procedure to remove the top layer of asphalt from a street, parking lot, or driveway without disturbing the sub-base. We remove ½”-  4+” before installing a new 11/2 "- 2” asphalt overlay during the milling process.
