Superior Asphalt, Inc. offers over 35 years of proven experience in pavement construction, restoration, and maintenance, including:

Site Preparation for New Asphalt Pavement

The overall strength and performance of asphalt pavement are dependent not only upon the asphalt mix’s structural design but also on the load-bearing capacity of the sub-base constructed.

A good sub-base will act as a stable surface to support pavement and the weight of expected traffic. It will aid in the prevention of damage to the asphalt during winter freeze-thaw cycles. Most importantly, the sub-base must be properly compacted to ensure durability.

What to Expect from Superior Asphalt, Inc. Site Preparation Crews:

  • Demolition and removal: Superior’s Site Preparation crew will use heavy equipment to remove all existing pavement and remove it from the job site. We recycle 100% of all clean tear-out material and reuse it in our asphalt mix designs, proudly keeping them out of Michigan’s dumps and waterways.

  • Grading and sloping: The sub-base must be properly sloped and graded to ensure no standing water on the asphalt surface. Proper drainage and water flow is key to expanding the life of an asphalt pavement. Standing water is the cause of most structural failures such as

  • potholes, cracks, and heaving.

  • Final Preparation of Sub Base: Once grading and sloping are complete, our prep-crew use heavy rollers to compact the sub-base. Proper compaction will ensure the durability of your installed asphalt pavement. If soft spots of clay or sand are discovered they will be properly undercut and replaced with a stronger aggregate before compaction is complete. Once the sub-base is completed to our satisfaction, Superior's prep-crew will clean the worksite thoroughly for our paving crews to take over and lay the asphalt surface.

  • Professionalism and Communication

Our experienced asphalt specialists will manage your project and provide you or your business with a surface you can be proud of. For more information on our milling and site preparation services throughout West & Mid Michigan, contact us today or call us directly at 616.451.3200.

What is Asphalt Milling?

Milling is a recycling and re-paving procedure to remove the top layer of asphalt from a street, parking lot, or driveway without disturbing the sub-base. Asphalt milling is used to remove ½” – 4+” before installing a new 1 1/2" - 2” asphalt overlay.

Benefits:

  • It saves money. Milling is one of the more cost-effective ways of paving reconstruction.

  • It is environmentally friendly. The milled asphalt is recycled to make new asphalt.

  • Speed. Aside from resurfacing your asphalt surface, milling is the most efficient solution to asphalt reconstruction.
